NEW MAILING LIST & GUESTBOOK!

Born in Buckinghamshire in the south-east of England, Emma spent most of her childhood in various parts of Dorset & Somerset. “We were known as the local hippies, my mum & stepfather were into self-sufficiency and we grew our own vegetables, bred/milked/killed/ate our own goats, had a donkey and cart and made crafts to sell at festivals.” Her father, who died when she was a young child, was legendary jazz & cabaret singer/pianist Hutch, adored by the public during the 1930’s and 40’s equally for his good looks and velvet voice, but unpopular with the royals due to his torrid affairs with Cole Porter and Edwina Mountbatten. Emma grew up listening to his recordings of the great jazz standards – but she didn’t know it was her father’s voice emanating from the stereo – she found out who he was later, and learned about him by reading the back of a album cover.emma hutchinson

Initially Emma began her musical career as a backing vocalist in soul and funk cover bands while working her day-job as a linguist/export manager. In the early 90’s her fascination with accapella music led to the formation of Thrush, an all-girl accapella group performing her satirical and politicized songs with titles like “The Green Shoots Of Recovery”, “Women On Their Way To Work” and “Give A Voice To The Voiceless.” The success of Thrush led to her joining semi-professional accapella group Sweet Soul Sisters as a songwriter/vocalist in 1992. Live concerts, international radio & TV appearances and the popular Freshly Squeezed CD followed.
